There is a special beauty in a celebration that leaves room for the smallest details. An elopement may be shared by two people alone or witnessed by a few of those closest to them. Either way, its intimacy allows the day to reflect the couple with unusual clarity.
For those dreaming of an elopement in Bali, the island offers extraordinary natural settings, a rich cultural landscape and an atmosphere of warmth and welcome.

The intimacy of an elopement lies in the freedom to make every detail meaningful. The flowers, the setting, the words you exchange and the time you spend together can all reflect the two of you, with room for spontaneity and joy.
Before thinking about a setting, it can help to decide together who, if anyone, you would like beside you, and the mood you hope the day will carry. Gardens suit a gathering this small. A garden retreat also gives a celebration room to unfold over several days.
At Balquisse Heritage Hotel, Indonesian craftsmanship and lush gardens create a setting that feels both considered and natural. Carved timber, tropical foliage and the changing afternoon light provide a quietly beautiful backdrop for a personal celebration.
Balinese ceremonies and sacred customs are an important part of the island’s living culture. They deserve to be approached with respect and, where relevant, with guidance from the local community rather than treated as decoration.
Your ceremony may be arranged in the gardens or at The Shaba Function House, and our events team would be pleased to talk through which setting suits the celebration you are planning. Paths lead between frangipani and sunlit verandas. Warm breezes move through the foliage. Traditional incense lends a soft fragrance to the air. With only a few people present, details matter. They become part of the ceremony itself.
Imagine a leisurely breakfast, time to prepare, a ceremony in the gardens and dinner beneath the evening sky. Perhaps you will add a spa treatment, portraits by the sea or a few days to explore Bali after the celebration. These are possibilities to discuss with the team, rather than a fixed programme: the day should be your own.
On the day of a small ceremony, the room where you prepare is where the celebration begins. Here, no two rooms are alike. Some are traditional Javanese gladak teak houses, lovingly restored, with verandas looking out over the greenery, while others open towards garden terraces or offer a generous space for bathing. Inside, Zohra Boukhari’s collected interiors bring carved timber and antique furniture together with handwoven textiles, so that the hours before the ceremony are spent among pieces that were chosen with care.
It is a place to dress. It is also a place to share a quiet moment. Our team would be happy to help you choose a room whose outlook and character suit the way you would like to spend the day.
Yoga is offered daily at The Shaba Shala. Built from recycled timber, the yoga house is open to the gardens and surrounded by lemongrass, and a class there can bring a calm pause to the day, whether you practise often or are simply curious.
Later on, a treatment at The Shaba Spa is a chance to experience Balinese bodywork, offered with warm oils and a considered touch. Our team can share the current treatment menu. Ask about options for couples. There is time, too, for a swim in one of the pools or for afternoon tea, before you return to your room to dress for the ceremony.
As the light softens, dinner at Saybah Restaurant in the gardens offers a gentle close to the day. For a special dinner after the ceremony, a generous Indonesian rijsttafel may be possible by prior arrangement. Rijsttafel is a dining tradition made for sharing. You may prefer the beachside tables of Jimbaran instead, where freshly prepared seafood is served as the sun sets over the bay.
A bonfire is offered each evening. Balinese dance is offered on Thursdays, and a movie night on Sundays, should you wish to linger a little longer. Please ask our team which of these apply to your rate, and whether any carry a charge.
The days after an elopement in Bali can feel like a continuation of the celebration, and Jimbaran is a lovely place to begin exploring. Kedonganan market lies at the bay’s northern end. There you can see something of a fishing tradition that continues to sustain the neighbourhood. It is a working market, so it is a place to visit as a guest, with respect for the fishermen and traders, and for the cooks who work there.
Along the shore, traditional jukung boats remain part of the coastal landscape. Guests are offered a shuttle to the beach and back in a vintage Volkswagen or Jeep. Further along the southern coast, beyond Jimbaran, lies Uluwatu, with its cliffs, temples and beaches, and in between these outings the gardens of Balquisse Heritage Hotel remain a welcoming place to return to.
When you first contact us, it helps to share the date you are considering and whether family or friends will join you. Please ask our team about the experiences available during your stay.
Allow time to discuss your preferred setting, guest count, photography, flowers, dining and any arrangements that require advance booking.
A small ceremony can hold a lifetime of meaning. If Bali is where you would like to begin that chapter, we would be delighted to hear what you have in mind.
Legal marriage may be possible subject to the relevant requirements; a symbolic ceremony does not itself create a legal marriage.
An elopement usually involves only the couple or a very small group, while an intimate wedding may include a slightly wider circle.
Begin early enough to confirm legal requirements, venue availability and any specialist suppliers.
