The House of a Hundred Stories: Staying in a Room That Remembers

Unique places to stay in Bali often reveal themselves gradually. At Balquisse Heritage Hotel, garden paths wind between flowering frangipani, the delicate fragrance of traditional incense and rooms with individual character. Here, beauty is found as much in the details as in the setting: a carved doorway, a handwoven textile, the generous shade of a teak veranda.

For travellers seeking unique places to stay in Bali, Balquisse Heritage Hotel offers a deeply personal expression of Indonesian heritage, considered design and contemporary comfort.

A story that began at home

In 1995, Blaise and Zohra arrived in Bali with their three-month-old daughter, Balquisse, and settled into a traditional Balinese home dating from the 1960s. By 1998, it had become a four-room guesthouse; by 2002, it had grown to six rooms. Over time, that first home evolved into the 21-room hotel of today.

Its growth was never simply about adding rooms. Each new space was approached with care, a love of beautiful objects and an enduring desire to pay homage to Indonesia’s architectural traditions, artists and craftspeople.

Architecture with a journey of its own

Among the hotel’s most distinctive accommodations are Sangon and Sangitani, traditional Javanese gladak teak houses. Carefully dismantled in Java and reassembled in Jimbaran, they preserve the proportions and craftsmanship of their origins while welcoming guests with the comforts of a contemporary stay.

Their verandas open towards the greenery. Inside, timber, natural light and carefully chosen furnishings create a generous sense of warmth.

Sangon and Sangitani belong to a wider collection of 21 individually designed rooms at Balquisse Heritage Hotel, a range that gives guests a choice of setting. Beyond the teak houses, other rooms look onto garden terraces. Some offer ample bathing spaces.

Collected with intention

Zohra Boukhari’s interiors are guided by a collector’s eye. Across the property, carved panels, antique furniture, ceramics and textiles have been brought together over years of discovery. A beautifully crafted door may find a new purpose as a headboard; handwoven cloth brings texture and a quiet sense of place. Each piece contributes to an atmosphere that feels collected rather than composed all at once. Colour and texture sit easily together, and each space keeps its own personality.

The Shaba Shala carries this philosophy into a new chapter. Built in 2023 using recycled timber, the two-storey yoga house is an expression of thoughtful reuse, honouring the hands and materials that came before. Open to its garden surroundings, it brings craftsmanship and nature into conversation. Doors and windows connect its practice spaces with the gardens beyond. They let in views of the greenery and the gentle scent of lemongrass.

Balquisse Heritage Hotel is not defined by any single room or object. It is the harmony between them: a collection of spaces that honours Indonesia and invites you to feel at home in its beauty.

Gardens and light

Set among tropical foliage in Jimbaran, Balquisse Heritage Hotel is a garden retreat. Sunlit verandas open onto the garden, and rooms open towards the greenery, bringing light and planting into everyday view. Four pools are part of the gardens, which bring together frangipani, foliage and sunlight. Rooms are individually designed, so each one has its own character.

Saybah Restaurant sits in the gardens too. An afternoon at The Shaba Spa can end with dinner at Saybah Restaurant. For a special evening, the Indonesian rijsttafel, a shared dining tradition, may be possible by prior arrangement.

Days made your own

Beyond the rooms, four pools invite leisurely afternoons. The Shaba Spa, daily yoga at The Shaba Shala and dining at Saybah Restaurant offer different pleasures throughout the day. A short journey brings you to Jimbaran Beach, where fishing boats and evening tables on the sand remain part of the bay’s everyday life.

Yoga is offered at two class times. Breakfast is offered each morning, and afternoon tea brings a quiet pause between an afternoon by the pools and the evening that follows. As night falls, the bonfire is lit. On Thursdays Balinese dance is offered, while Sundays are reserved for movie night. Trips to Jimbaran Beach and back are offered by vintage Volkswagen or Jeep shuttle. Please ask the hotel team which of these apply to your rate, and whether any carry a charge.

On simpler days, an afternoon swim and a return to the garden make a gentle end to the day, perhaps with a relaxed dinner. Campuhan, a curated retreat experience, sits alongside the hotel’s programme. Guests are welcome to enquire about future editions and dates.

Jimbaran beyond the gardens

Jimbaran is a neighbourhood that rewards curiosity, and Balquisse Heritage Hotel is a comfortable starting point from which to discover it. Jukung boats belong to the coastal landscape here. Kedonganan market lies at the northern end of the bay. Its stalls, and the exchanges between fishermen, traders and cooks, offer a vivid glimpse of local life and of the fishing traditions that remain part of the neighbourhood.

Later in the day, the bay offers beachside dining and the colours of sunset. From Jimbaran on the southern coast, Uluwatu with its cliffs, temples and beaches is within reach.
