Practice at The Shaba Shala: Yoga Among the Gardens

For travellers exploring a yoga retreat in Bali, The Shaba Shala offers a place to practise within a wider stay devoted to rest, discovery and the pleasures of the island.

You will find the Shala in the gardens of Balquisse Heritage Hotel in Jimbaran, on Bali’s southern coast. Individually designed rooms, four pools, The Shaba Spa and Saybah Restaurant share the same grounds, with the bay nearby, so a class can take its place alongside everything else the day may hold.

A space created with intention

Built in 2023 from recycled wood, the two-storey Shala sits within the grounds of Balquisse Heritage Hotel. Its architecture celebrates the warmth and character of natural materials, while doors and windows connect the practice spaces to the surrounding gardens. The result is an inviting place to practise, closely connected to nature.

The setting is an extension of the Balquisse Heritage Hotel philosophy: thoughtful reuse, respect for craftsmanship and a lasting connection to nature.

That philosophy runs through the whole property. Over many years, Zohra Boukhari has furnished its interiors with a collector’s eye, bringing together carved panels, antique furniture, ceramics and handwoven textiles. Some pieces may find a new purpose; a beautifully crafted door, for instance, may serve as a headboard. With the Shala, the same thinking extends to an entire building. Its recycled timber carries the work of the hands that first shaped it, and that craftsmanship now has a second life, opening onto the gardens around it.

Garden paths wind through the grounds between flowering frangipani and tropical foliage, by sunlit verandas and carved doorways and rooms that each have their own character. On a warm breeze comes the gentle scent of traditional incense. Across the hotel, rooms open towards the greenery. In the Shala, that easy exchange between indoors and out continues.

A daily invitation to practise

Yoga is offered daily, with two class times to choose from. Whether yoga is already part of your routine or something you are discovering for the first time, the Shala invites you to approach the practice with curiosity and care. Ask our team for the current schedule and class details.

At The Shaba Shala, the beauty of practice begins with the setting. Recycled timber, open views towards the greenery and the gentle fragrance of lemongrass create a space where movement and stillness can find their natural rhythm.

Yoga’s philosophical and spiritual roots lie in India; practising it in Bali offers an opportunity to appreciate both that heritage and the island’s own rich traditions of reflection and connection with nature.

Beyond the mat

A morning class might be followed by breakfast at Saybah Restaurant, a swim in one of the four pools or a treatment at The Shaba Spa. Jimbaran Beach is nearby for an afternoon by the sea, while the hotel gardens offer the pleasure of doing very little at all.

Later, the hotel has more to share. Afternoon tea is offered as the light softens. The evening brings a bonfire, Balinese dance on Thursdays and a movie night on Sundays. Whatever you plan, please ask our team which of these experiences apply to your stay, and whether any carry a charge. Dinner at Saybah Restaurant brings the evening to a close, and for a special evening, the Indonesian rijsttafel, a generous tradition of shared dishes, can be enjoyed by prior arrangement.

Your room waits between these moments. Sangon and Sangitani, for example, are gladak teak houses from Java, taken apart there and rebuilt in Jimbaran. Other rooms open towards garden terraces or offer generous bathing spaces, and each pairs its own character with contemporary comfort. Tell our team how you hope to spend your days, and they can suggest a room to match.

The Shala also forms part of a broader programme of wellbeing experiences. Campuhan, our curated retreat, brings together practices and moments of reflection within the Balquisse Heritage Hotel setting; please enquire about future editions and their dates.

Some guests come for a daily class within a leisurely holiday. Others seek a more immersive retreat experience. Both can find a place here, provided the programme and dates match what they are looking for.

From the Shala to the bay

Jimbaran Bay belongs to the day as well. A vintage Volkswagen or Jeep shuttle is offered to the beach and back. It adds a little character to the journey. Parts of the surrounding streets can also be explored on foot. It is a living neighbourhood of family compounds, temples, food stalls and small businesses, with customs of its own. Along the shore, traditional jukung boats are a familiar sight, and Kedonganan market, towards the northern end of the bay, shows how closely local life is tied to fishing. It is a working place, so visit with respect for the people who work there.

Swimming in the bay depends on the sea, so ask for local advice before going in. A walk along the sand is a pleasant alternative. Tables by the water serve seafood. Further along the peninsula lie the cliffs and temples of Uluwatu. Afterwards, the hotel gardens welcome you back, with another class at The Shaba Shala to look forward to the following day.

Discover The Shaba Shala and let your time in Bali unfold with intention.
